Although diversity is a big strength of India, there can be a high variation of experience depending on where you go, and your experience. It can be safe (depending on where you go), but it is best to be with a local/experienced guide.
Given our local knowledge and prior experiences leading groups, as well as traveling internationally extensively, your safety is our top priority. Kolkata is a much safer and more progressive part of India, and during Durga Puja there is extensive security due to it being a spiritually focused festival.
Kolkata is very progressive, but during Durga Puja, people from all over India come. To be respectful of everyone’s culture, it is best to wear long sleeves and cover legs as well (light of course). The weather is nice and cool at this time.
The clothing is VERY cheap, so best idea is to bring as little Western clothing as possible, and buy Indian clothes to wear on our trip. Then, you will have fun clothes to take home that are great quality for a fraction of the price in your home country!
This is more a sign of respect than anything. You will be treated better and locals will be more interested to interact with you in a friendly way.
We will mostly have vegan, home cooked delicious meals three times a day. It is recommended to avoid street food and raw vegetables/raw fruit with exposed skin, as well as ice. Only drink bottled water. When we eat out, it will be at reputable restaurants that we have tried.
